BBC claim commitment to 'community' shows but questions remain about local black programmes Beeb bosses say 'no evidence' of threat to African and Caribbean talk shows - but say they're consulting on changes
from bosses that one of the options on the table was to replace all African and Caribbean local shows with a single national show on BBC Sounds.: “We had a meeting with bosses and were told that the BBC is committed to these shows, but we have no idea what form or structure this commitment will take.”Rhodri Talfan Davies, the BBC’s director of nations, scoffed at suggestions that the shows faced the axe.
“I would say that the biggest shift that I’ve seen on local radio in the last two or three years, is to make sure that the diverse communities and different ethnic minority issues are reflected across our output. “They are ringfencing the breakfast and drivetime shows to make sure there is no impact whatsoever, because they recognise how important that those shows are to local communities.“So, there will be there will be a disproportionate impact to the black shows, relative to breakfast and drivetime. What he needs to recognise is that black and Asian programming are as important, if not more important, to those communities than their breakfast show.
Consultations were ongoing with the National Union of Journalists, but the BBC did not anticipate major changes from their current plans.
