Fisheries officers have confirmed a one to two-metre bronze whaler was responsible for biting a man who was spearfishing in WA's north on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has confirmed a bronze whaler was behind the incident which occurred on Monday. He remains at the nursing post, with health authorities confirming on Tuesday morning he was in a stable condition.The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has confirmed the beach will stay open, although shark hazard signs have been erected that will remain until the end of the week.
