If you're hankering for chicken next year and head to what used to be the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Jacksonville, you may find a luxury apartment complex instead.
When Stuart and his wife and business partner, Margo Klar, took over the restaurant in 2019, they initially leased the 1.43-acre tract it sits on. They subsequently bought the land for $1 million in a sale recorded Oct. 29, 2021, Duval County property and court records show.
The measure will have to go through at least three public hearings involving land use and zoning before there is a final vote by the council. Public hearings currently are set for Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Sept. 13 in the process.Chicken and seafood still offered until next year Stuart said the restaurant building"has been added onto so many times that it is so inefficient" that it's no longer practical to maintain.
The restaurant has weathered the COVID-19 pandemic but challenges remain, including hiring enough staff.
