After a year out of the game, Kurtley Beale returned to rugby on Saturday with Randwick in a 25-18 loss to Brothers in Brisbane, honouring his younger brother, William, who passed away on Thursday night.
Opportunities to run the ball were rare for Beale, but at 53 minutes, he saw an opportunity when his team were camped on their line and demanded the ball. After getting the ball under severe pressure, Beale dropped his shoulder and easily swerved past defenders, opening the field up for Randwick winger Christian Yassmin to eventually score.
William was a talented rugby player who had also attended St Joseph’s College in Sydney, where Kurtley first made his name as a prodigious talent in the game. William also showed promise in rugby league, representing Penrith at Harold Matthews level.Brothers and Randwick held a minute’s silence before the game, honouring former Galloping Greens player and coach Luke Callen, who died at 46 years old after suffering from pancreatic cancer, and Beale’s late brother at a capacity Crosby Park.
