After the devastating Caldor Fire of 2021 forced 22,000 residents to evacuate the Lake Tahoe area, bears took over the town, digging through trash bins and damaging properties in search of food, the Guardian reported. They broke into homes, cars and gas stations, having a “heyday” while residents were forced to watch the “nightmare” unfold. “There’s so much garbage on the street because of the bears.
According to Sherwin, wildlife officials in California and Nevada are putting up traps and holding a meeting Feb. 16 to figure out a humane solution to the bear break-ins. “We need our residents and our visitors to understand how to prevent the attraction of bears breaking into houses,” former South Lake Tahoe Mayor Brooke Laine told This is Reno. “We’re the source of the problem.”
