Rather than battling jet lag, F1 drivers — and reporters — stick to a European schedule for the night race.

Since becoming Formula One’s first night race 15 years ago, theNot only is there the unforgiving heat and humidity that can cost drivers around three kilos in body weight over a race distance, or the looming walls of the street track that punish even the smallest of mistakes.

“I basically stay on European time, really spot on,” Valtteri Bottas said. “I went to bed at 5 a.m., and I woke up at 2 p.m.” Everyone has different approaches to getting their sleep schedule right. Unlike Bottas, Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg said his sleep comes “pretty naturally” and that he will rest when he feels he needs to. “I’m not one of those who is like, I need to sleep exactly at 5 a.m. or for so many hours,” he said. “I take it as it comes, take it as I feel it — like my driving!”

What about in the race, when sessions are running so late? “There I can push, then the adrenaline gets going, and you can keep on going,” Steiner said. “After the race, I fly overnight to Japan; I will be sleeping at one o’clock or two o’clock on the plane. I slept from LA to here for 11 hours out of 17. I’m not doing bad.”then the first night in Singapore is the most important one to push through if you’re committing to the European schedule.
