It's being swallowed by coastal erosion, fuelled by the La Niña weather event.Storms and pounding waves have swallowed much of the golden sand, leaving multi-million homes teetering precariously over water.Researchers from The University of NSW have painted a picture of the true extent of erosion devastation.

A paper published today found the southeast coast of Australia experiences more erosion during La Niña than the El Niño event. Lead researcher Kilian Vos told 9news.com.au said the team analysed data from more than 3,000 sandy beaches. "The data available shows that the year 2021 saw more than 20 per cent of sandy beaches experiencing extreme erosion in south east Australia, which has only occurred five other times since 1987."
