Seafood waste is being made into fertiliser and a cheese boiler plant runs on wood waste in the small New South Wales town. Could this be the future of sustainability?
The group behind the push hopes what is learnt in Bega can become a blueprint for the rest of Australia.
He has spent the last two years convincing leaders in business, government and academia to support Australia's biggest circularity experiment. "Unfortunately that number's increasing, and it's increasing larger than our population growth," said Tim Cook, the council's waste strategy coordinator.Mr Cook said the amount of landfill waste could be cut from 52 per cent to single digits if the community supported the circularity project by changing behaviour. The Bega Group's dairy factory boiler ran on wood waste, with the fly ash residue used as a lime replacement on pastures.
A plan to build a centre focused on the development of circular economies has been announced for Bega, New South Wales. The former mayor Kristy McBain, now the state's minister for regional development, said if anyone could bring about lasting change, it was Mr Irvin with his strong connections in the community.
