China has raised concerns about a potential meeting between United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen.
The landmark meeting is expected to occur in the coming weeks, with reports it will now happen in Mr McCarthy’s home state of California instead of Taiwan.“At present, various departments are communicating and preparing for relevant plans, and the planning of the related itinerary will be explained in a timely manner after the plan is finalised,” it said. While speaking to reporters in Washington Mr McCarthy confirmed the meeting, adding that “China can’t tell me where and when I can go”.
“The Taiwan question is the core of the core interests of China, the bedrock of the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations,” she said.
