'it is easier to get to Dublin than it is to get to Dunmurry around midnight from Belfast City Centre.'

Belfast Council is calling for an urgent audience with Translink to put pressure on the public transport service to provide a new late night bus timetable in the city.

A council officer report for the committee states: “The council has engaged with Translink and a range of stakeholders through the “Connectivity, Active and Sustainable Travel” sub group, co-chaired by Translink and Sustrans. He said: “When I brought this motion I made a point of singling out that Translink gave a cut-and-paste, boilerplate response every time this issue came up, and it has been coming up for quite a few years now. We have fallen a decade behind in the provision of public transport, particularly when it comes to night time.

He said: “We have a number of night time hospitality places that have announced closure in the last month, a couple of premises going up for sale because they are no longer viable as bars and restaurants. We are in a place where if you go to a gig, the theatre, late night cinema screenings, whatever, you see people leaving early for the last bus. They don’t want to stay for the end of the event and be stranded in the city centre for an hour or two.
