Pope Benedict was unfairly maligned - he can't be blamed for all the problems with the Catholic Church 💬 Michael Day
In the new age of papal “selfies” ushered in by the Argentinian pontiff it didn’t hurt that Francis looked just right; like a pope, certainly, but friendly, avuncular. John Paul II looked serious, distinguished; Benedict… odd, a little unsavoury, even.
The trouble was Benedict was raising a bar that was set so scandalously low. He pushed through changes to church law to make it easier to defrock predator priests, and he sacked hundreds of them. He was the first pontiff to meet with abuse survivors. Benedict had, and still has, a legion of Catholic admirers. To others, this bookish philosopher pope, was simply regurgitating the Platonesque view of a divine cosmic order, with no room for innovation or change, or God forbid, new-fangled ideas such as moral relativism. When in 1986 Ratzinger described homosexuality as “intrinsically disordered”, he was simply re-affirming this divine order. Not expressing malice.
