Benji Marshall's hopes of a fairytale Wests Tigers farewell at Leichhardt Oval have been shattered because of a scheduling clash with local junior rugby league grand finals | mrchrisnico

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said public health and safety was the priority, and the club was looking forward to farewelling its departing players in round 20."The expert advice we have received is that neither ground could be transformed to meet the biosecurity protocols, and we recognise that the health and safety of our players and general community must come first," Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe said.

"While we would have liked to farewell two of our greatest ever players at one of our suburban home grounds, we are looking forward to welcoming a greater number of members and fans to Bankwest Stadium in what will no doubt be a special match for our club." Marshall is easily the most popular Wests Tiger in the history of the joint venture and is yet to decide if he plays on next year.Speaking ononce the split was confirmed, Marshall said last week: "I’m not angry, it’s more I wish I could have retired here.

"If anything I was just a bit disappointed with how it came out. Reading it in the papers. Obviously because I’m not on a massive wage at the Tigers I just thought making the decision at the end of the season would be fine because I’m not going to break the bank with the salary cap. "Squads are going to 28 next year and the club has five halves on the books next year and there was no room for me. But I’m a big boy. That’s part and parcel of rugby league. I’ve been in this position before. I still feel like I have a lot to offer and there’s a few things I still want to do. It’s just not going to be at the Tigers."
