Karim Benzema retires from international football following France's World Cup final defeat
The French striker has been a key player for his country during his career, racking up 97 caps and scoring 37 goals in the process.The striker had been hoping to lead the line for France in Qatar but a thigh injury ruled him out of the competition
However following France’s dramatic final defeat to Argentina on Sunday, the Real Madrid man has decided to hang up his international boots. Taking to social media, he wrote: “I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it!Benzema is entering the final years of his career and had hoped of playing a key role for Didier Deschamps’ side at the World Cup.
Unfortunately the 35-year-old suffered a thigh injury in the days before the competition got underway in Qatar, meaning that he missed out on the chance to compete for his country on the grandest stage of all. J’ai fait les efforts et les erreurs qu’il fallait pour être là où je suis aujourd’hui et j’en suis fier !
