The Herald's View: Berejiklian’s reputation tarnished by damning report into grants rorts

The martyr’s halo that was floating above the head of former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian last year is fading fast following a damning report into her role in using hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer’s money for political pork barrelling.

The Stronger Communities and the Regional Cultural funds were supposed to help locals councils struggling with the wave of mergers a few years ago and offer arts facilities to communities in the bush. Auditor-General Margaret Crawford was scathing in her assessment of the motivations for setting up these multi-million-dollar grants programs without basic guidelines or record keeping. The report said it could have been a “purposeful attempt to avoid transparency and accountability over the involvement of the former premier and deputy premier in approving grant allocations”.
