Bernie Sanders is on the verge of running away with the Democratic Party's presidential nomination after the self-declared democratic socialist crushed his opponents in the Nevada caucuses

With polls showing the 78-year old ahead in electorally-powerful states such as California and Texas, it is becoming increasingly possible he will have the nomination locked down by Super Tuesday on March 3.

Entrance polls from Nevada showed Hispanic voters overwhelmingly supporting Sanders, adding to his dominance among younger and more progressive white voters. Sanders won a stunning 60 per cent of votes from caucus-goers under the age of 45, compared to 13 per cent for Buttigieg.Sanders performed less well with older voters and African American voters, who tended to favour Biden.
