The knowledge they share transcends roles and industries, which is perhaps why it cuts through. Here are seven highlights from BOSS interviews in 2022.
Relatively early in my career, I had moved out of a functional role to lead a business unit. I was sitting around the CEO’s leadership team. I had a moment where I was working with a mentor and I said to him: “I watch the others around the table, and they’re doing this, and they’re doing that. I need to adapt and change.”
And he looked at me and said: “Vicki, do you think you were chosen for the role because you are like them? Or do you think you were chosen because you’re different?” I fell into that trap of thinking I needed to be like other people, and I think the best advice I ever got was that you absolutely have toEven as I stepped into this role, every CEO does it differently. Finding my way to do it, and being very comfortable with that, is critical. There are very few decisions you can’t undo, says Paul Waterson, CEO of Australian Venue Co.
Some of the best advice they gave me was to go for growth. There are very few decisions you can’t undo, so be bold, keep making decisions and move forward. When I wanted to go in a certain direction that Vita didn’t agree with, she would tell me: “OK, we will do it your way and when it doesn’t work, we will do it my way.”Finally, if things go wrong, escalate it early and deal with it. If you have to eat a shit sandwich, don’t nibble.Ahmed Fahour says the best advice he ever received was to surround himself with the best people.
