Since becoming governor in 2015, Abbott and Texas lawmakers have loosened firearm restrictions. Last year, he signed a law doing away with background checks for concealed handguns. In Friday’s debate with O’Rourke,Uvalde families have put at the top of their demands raising the age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle such as the one used in the shooting from 18 to 21 years old.
