Sheriff’s Office investigating how man who wounded deputy died following shootout, standoff
The shootout occurred Tuesday afternoon in the 200 block of Demya Drive on the far West Side, where deputies were looking for the man — believed to be 18 or 19 years old with felony warrants for his arrest for aggravated robbery and a narcotics-related charge. After getting no response from knocking on the house’s door, they went behind it to the shed, which had been converted to a bedroom.
Sheriff Javier Salazar, who recounted the incident Tuesday evening after viewing body camera footage from the wounded deputy, did not immediately know whether that weapon was used in the shootout. He also did not know whether the man was killed by return fire from the deputies or whether he killed himself.
The sheriff described the deputy’s reaction as a “small exclamation.” As the deputy turned, he was struck at least once in his upper left back by what sounded like a burst from an automatic weapon, Salazar said.
