SA Supreme Court will next week hear a battle for control of the native title group that holds the key to BHP’s dream of expanding its Australian copper mines.
A push for a genetic audit of a bitterly divided native title group has reached the courts, threatening to delay and complicate BHP’s dream of expanding Australia’s best copper district.
“In this court case I am asking for people to fight for our land back. That land belongs to us,” Mr Reid toldThis is not a fight against mining; economic development from mining arid lands near Roxby Downs is one of the few things the Kokatha community seems to agree upon. In his application to the SA Supreme Court, Mr Reid names 12 individuals as respondents, some of whom are directors of KAC. The federal regulator of native title corporations, ORIC, was also named as a respondent, along with KAC.To secure membership of the KAC, an applicant must be a descendant of one of the 19 ancestors by birth or adoption.
BHP’s dream of building a big Australian copper business remains hostage to this apparently worsening factionalism. BHP is keen to grow its copper production in the belief the red metal will enjoy strong demand as the world electrifies.Advertisement
