The 2015 Mariana dam collapse was one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters. BHP and Brazilian company Vale will pay nearly $45 billion in compensation.

Australian multinational mining company BHP and Brazilian company Vale have reached a 170 billion reais settlement with authorities in Brazil to compensate the country for the collapse of a massive waste dam at an iron ore mine in 2015. Under the agreement, Samarco — a joint venture between BHP and Vale — will pay the compensation over 20 years.

They will allocate the other 32 billion reais to pay for compensation for affected people and reparation actions that will remain under their responsibility, in addition to the 38 billion reais that the miners say they have disbursed.
