A worker has died after being struck by a train at a BHP site in northern Western Australia. 9News

The mining giant said the worker, a 51-year-old man, was struck at 9.30pm yesterday while working at the company's rail yard in Boodarie, near Port Hedland in the Pilbara region.

The company - one of Australia's biggest mining corporations - suspended mining operations for 24 hours following the accident.A worker has died after being struck by a train at a BHP site in northern Western Australia."Of course, that is nothing compared to the grief and loss being felt by the person's family, friends and colleagues," he said, in a statement.Craig said BHP would carry out a full investigation and counselling services were available.

The WA mining safety regulator, the Office of National Rail Safety and WorkSafe were informed of the fatality and police were preparing a report for the coroner.The WA Mining and Energy Union said it would also investigate the circumstances of the accident.
