Kicking off Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, Bianca Spender will show at a gallery named for her late mother, Carla Zampatti.
This year, Ms Spender will be opening the week at a gallery named for her mother at Sydney’s Carriageworks. It will be, she says, a moment of reflection and celebration.“It’s more a presence than an absence,” Ms Spender said of her mother’s legacy. “I think when you first lose someone, you’re so aware of the absence of them. Now, going into this, I’m starting to feel the presence of her in those spaces. Because she did have such a presence.
For the first time, adaptive clothing will be shown on the runway, as well as a digital fashion presentation and a runway dedicated to plus-size fashion. Once again, buy-now, pay-later provider Afterpay will be the event’s principal sponsor, although co-chief executive Nick Molnar will not be in attendance.“It is a real honour to be able to open the week,” Ms Spender said. “I really appreciate what it means as a creative.
“I am naturally quiet, I am not the loudest person in the room,” she said. “But I’ve tried to make that a virtue in some ways. I am who I am. My show is quieter, it’s not intense. But I hope there is a courage and optimism to it.”
