A bicyclist from San Leandro was in grave condition after he was hit by a car in Oakland on Wednesday night.

OAKLAND — A 40-year-old bicyclist was in grave condition after he was hit by a car Wednesday night while riding near the Oakland Estuary, authorities said.Police said the bicyclist had just ridden off the 16th Avenue overpass above Interstate 880 onto Embarcadero about 10:49 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a Ford C Max that was driving east on Embarcadero.He was thrown off his bicycle and suffered major head injuries, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.

The car driver, a 65-year-old Oakland man, remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, police said.Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8572.
