US President Joe Biden has dispatched his top diplomat Antony Blinken to Israel; Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil urges Australians not to attend Israeli-Palestinian rallies; follow updates live.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opposition politician Benny Gantz and other officials will be in a wartime cabinet.Israel launched retaliatory strikes inside Lebanon on Wednesday, hitting targets belonging to Hezbollah.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said it was possible there would be a large demand for the flights. “At this stage, those Qantas flights are our starting point and we’ll continue to work very hard to make sure that Australians who need to leave are able to do so.” Israel’s military has responded with a devastating wave of airstrikes in Gaza, killing hundreds and injuring thousands, and its troops appear to be preparing for a ground invasion, a move that would likely massively increase the loss of life in the densely populated enclave. Israel has also taken steps to cut off Gaza’s water, energy and food supplies.
More than 2000 people have died on both sides since the initial attack on Saturday and retaliatory strikes on Gaza, according to Israeli and Palestinian authorities. O’Neil condemned the “indiscriminate” attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians as a “disgraceful atrocity” but said Palestinians will also suffer because of Israel’s response.“This is not about politics, it’s not about your views on Palestine and Israel. What has happened here is a terrorist organisation has indiscriminately attacked and killed innocent men, women and children. There’s no ifs or buts about this.
