| US President Joe Biden evoked the courage of the late-John Paul II, the Polish pope, against communist Russia in a speech in Warsaw during which he went off-script and seemed to suggest Vladimir Putin be removed from power.

“The President’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbours or the region. He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia or regime change,” the official said.In a major address delivered at Warsaw’s Royal Castle, Mr Biden evoked Poland’s four decades behind the Iron Curtain in an effort to build a case that the world’s democracies must urgently confront an autocratic Russia as a threat to global security and freedom.

“This battle will not be won in days or months either. We need to steel ourselves for the long fight ahead.”Mr Biden’s speech capped a three-day visit to Europe that included a summit with NATO, G7 and EU leaders, as well as a visit to US troops stationed in eastern Poland close to the Ukrainian border.
