.POTUS Biden dusts off BillClinton and BarackObama playbook for battling HouseGOP
From advancing abortion legislation to conjecture about slashing Social Security and Medicare, House Republicans are Biden and the Democrats' main targets before next year's elections. But while House GOP lawmakers are being urged to better balance their base strategy with their newfound responsibilities now that they are in the majority, the White House is also being warned against being too partisan during negotiations over raising the debt ceiling.
"Why would anyone think House Republicans are planning to cut Social Security and Medicare?" White House spokesman Andrew Bates added in an email hours later."Could it be because for many months and years, they’ve explicitly said so?" "Republicans have themselves admitted in the past that default would trigger an economic collapse, killing millions of jobs and decimating 401 plans," he said."That’s why they voted to raise the debt ceiling without brinkmanship three times during [former President Donald Trump's] administration — with strong bipartisan support from their Democratic colleagues."
"This is a time, it seems like, that the high theatrics can go on, but 2011 didn't work out well for anybody, and a lot of people were harmed, and we shouldn't go through that again," he said."I understand, from the Democratic Party, where they would be coming [from] and saying that's a thing that gets people scared."
