President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better package is likely doomed after Senator Joe Manchin pulled his support for the bill on Sunday local time.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki attacked Mr Manchin’s comments saying they were inconsistent with his recent negotiations with Mr Biden.
Mr Manchin’s decision could imperil the Democrats’ effort to translate their thin congressional majority and control of the White House into a wide-ranging legislative package before midterm elections next year. Mr Manchin was immediately attacked by far-left Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders who demanded the bill be brought to the vote in the Senate in any case.
