The meeting between Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi comes at a critical time for U.S.-China relations with a range of economic and security issues at stake.

Administration officials have been preparing for a possible meeting in November around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit in San Francisco.

The last time Xi and Biden met was on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, in November. The Biden administration has worried that a lack of communication between the two countries could lead to an unintentional confrontation and has sought in recent months to get relations back on track after they hit a new low in February when the Pentagon shot down the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the U.S.on the sidelines of a summit of world leaders in Bali, Indonesia.

Sullivan’s meeting follows a series of high-level talks between U.S. and Chinese officials in recent months. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visited China last month. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen traveled to Beijing in July.Antony Blinken met in June with Xi in Beijing
