US President Joe Biden's outlined actions are intended to mitigate some potential penalties of those seeking abortion after the ruling, but are limited in their ability to safeguard access to abortion nationwide. 9News EXPLAINED:
"I'm asking the Justice Department, that much like they did in the civil rights era, to do something, to do everything in their power to protect these women seeking to invoke their rights," Biden said at the White House.
Biden acknowledged the limitations facing his office, saying it would require an act of Congress to restore access to abortion in the more than a dozen states where strict limits or total bans have gone into effect in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling.READ MORE: "Let me be clear, while I wish it had not come to this, this is the fastest route available," Biden said.There is no action the President can take to restore the nationwide right to an abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling. Biden has acknowledged publicly his options to expand abortion access remain limited.
Friday's executive order will prompt Becerra to take steps to ensure access to abortion, including FDA-approved medication abortion and expanded access "to the full range of reproductive health services," according to an administration fact sheet shared with CNN. His executive order also directs agencies to work to educate medical providers and insurers about how and when they are required to share privileged patient information with authorities — an effort to protect women who seek or utilize abortion services.
