Biden signed an executive order expanding the scope of U.S. sanctions against Sudan to include people and entities that threaten the African nation’s peace, security and stability
President Biden signed an executive order enabling the U.S. to impose new sanctions on individuals and entities related to the conflict in Sudan.
Those activities include obstructing the formation and operation of a democratically elected government in Sudan, censorship, corruption, human-rights abuses and interference in United Nations peacekeeping missions or humanitarian efforts, the order said. The sanctions power also extends to the blacklisting of the executives of sanctioned entities as well as the spouses and adult children of sanctioned individuals.
President Biden’s executive order, while lacking a typical annex which lists specific individuals or entities facing immediate sanctions, is a warning to those involved in or assisting either side in the current conflict in Sudan, as it indicates that new designations will likely come soon, sanctions experts said.
