Joe Biden has accepted an invitation to visit Japan for a meeting of Quad leaders, likely to take place shortly after the Australian election.
| US President Joe Biden has accepted an invitation from the Japanese Prime Minister to visit Tokyo to meet with other leaders of theafter the Australian election, which must be called by May.
An 80-minute virtual meeting between Mr Biden and Mr Kishida on Friday night has further cemented the United States’ most important defence relationship in the region as concerns grow over China’s territorial ambitions in the region, including Taiwan. However, security issues and concerns about China’s actions in the East and South China Seas, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang dominated the discussions.“The two leaders opposed unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China Seas and [also opposed] any economic coercion, and shared the intention to co-ordinate closely in addressing various issues related to China,” Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
