If half the battle in life is showing up, Xi Jinping and Joe Biden both leave much to be desired when it comes to international diplomacy.
Either Jakarta or New Delhi would have provided an appropriately neutral location for the leaders of the world’s two most powerful nations to meet face-to-face for just the second time since Biden entered office. Moreover, both leaders have missed a prime opportunity to burnish their nation’s credentials as constructive and committed Indo-Pacific powers, a region where they are duelling for dominance.By not showing up in Jakarta, Biden is sending a clear signal to the world’s fourth-most populous country that it isn’t a priority for the US.
If Xi opts against going to New Delhi, as looks increasingly likely, it will be an even more significant snub. Since coming to power in 2012, Xi has attended every G20 summit in person , reflecting the gathering’s unique importance in bringing together leaders of the world’s major economies.
