With Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer candidates to be traded after the 2019 season, Shane Bieber's emergence takes on added importance.

Shane Bieber, who went 11-5 as a rookie last year, has Corey Kluber-like control.

Perhaps the best reflection of Bieber’s rapid ascension and seamless assimilation into the major leagues is this: he accomplished all the above before taking part in his first major league spring training camp. Granted, spring training statistics, as a general rule, are meaningless. In Bieber’s case, however, they are, at the very least, an early indication that his eye-catching rookie season last year may not have been a fluke.

In a combined 13 starts at Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus prior to being called up by the Indians last year, Bieber was 6-1 with a 1.47 ERA, 77 strikeouts and just seven walks. “He’s so eager to learn, and has so much aptitude, and a ton of talent to boot,” said Francona. “It’s going to be fun to watch. He’s already good, and he’s getting better.”
