Marcelo Bielsa will not return to Athletic Bilbao as head coach after Jon Uriarte won the club’s presidential elections on Friday evening.manager Bielsa was set to coach the side if Inaki Arechabaleta won the elections, having given a presentation to the club on Monday. The 66-year-old previously managed Athletic between 2011 and 2013.
However, Uriarte, who presented himself as the candidate of change, won the presidency with 47.7 per cent of the vote, compared to 33.7 per cent for Arechabaleta, and 18.1 per cent for Ricardo Barkala. Uriarte’s victory ensures a return instead for Valverde, 58, who scored 50 goals in 188 appearances for Athletic from 1990-96, and coachedIn two spells as Athletic coach, 2003-05 and 2013-17, he oversaw 306 games, more than anyone in club history. He delivered European qualification in each of his last four seasons, including a spot in theAthletic are due back to begin pre-season training on July 5.
