Regional communities prone to patchy electricity and power outages during tourist peaks will have their supply shored up under the Allan government’s first round of neighbourhood batteries.
They will be delivered across 20 towns and provide 4.2 megawatt hours of storage in areas such as Queenscliff, Traralgon, and Yackandandah. Entire communities on Phillip Island were blacked out after storms smashed the state on February 13, knocking down enough powerlines in Victoria to cut supply to as many as 530,000 homes.
Solar power made up 3 per cent of the state’s total energy mix over the past 12 months, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator, but during peak periods in the middle of the day can make up as much as 50 per cent of the state’s generation. Wind made up 23 per cent over the same period. The state government has committed $42 million for the entire neighbourhood batteries program, which was pitched ahead of the election as a way to expand access to batteries for households with rooftop solar.
