Winnie de Silva has heard her son Leon’s voice for the first time since the pair survived the Gold Coast helicopter crash that claimed four lives this week.
The mother and son from Geelong West, south-west of Melbourne, were in one of the two helicopters that collided midair on the Gold Coast near Sea World about 2pm on Monday.
Winnie, who is now in a stable condition in the Gold Coast University Hospital, said in a statement on Friday that she had a video call with Leon and he gave her a “thumbs up” sign, as well as “one of his big, beautiful smiles”. People have rallied around the mother and son, including through an online fundraiser which was launched shortly after the crash.
