What are you up to this weekend? A couple of pints in the pub? A fancy dinner with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon? Probably – over half of UK adults drinkon a weekly basis. Like it or not, having a drink is part of the fabric of British life, fuelling fights and sparking love affairs since before records began., five years after it was last on TV, it will embrace this Great British tradition of getting pissed.
All this is not to dismiss the issues alcohol has allegedly not only perpetuated, but caused, on reality TV. A lawsuit filed by a past cast member ofclaims producers denied them food and water, instead giving them more alcohol, which “altered their emotions and decision-making”. Netflix and showrunner Chris Coele deny the accusations.
Getting drunk, even on national TV, isn’t the huge evil some would have us believe. Just this week I giggled along to Bob Mortimer plastered onbe any different? If anything, it’ll inject a bit of what most reality TV is missing these days: fun.
