F1: Albert Park in Melbourne will host the season-opening race of the 2025 Formula One season.
The preparation strategies of Formula 1 teams are so advanced in 2024 that they’re never really caught off-guard.
The reason that’s so problematic is that Pirelli has been unable to send an engineering team to the track in advance to measure the changes. Carlos Sainz, in sizzling form, revealed that the drivers had raises these concerns with F1 and the FIA. Last year saw the biggest change, rearranging the weekend to carve out Saturday for sprint qualifying and the sprint race.
There are some crucial further changes to the weekend in direct response to last year’s farcical post-race scenes at the United States Grand Prix. Much like the Shanghai International Circuit, COTA is built on constantly shifting soft soil, which makes set-up difficult to predict from year to year. Part of the point of the sprint weekend and its reduced practice time is to give teams and drivers less chance to perfect their packages, theoretically jumbling the order.
Turns 6, 11, 14 and 16 all present as obvious overtaking hotspots, and the complex tightening turns 1 and 2 always generate action. There are some notable differences between last year’s championship order and the total points scored only in sprint races, albeit with Verstappen still comfortably in the lead.
