Energy wonk Audrey Zibelman says government intervention in electricity markets should surprise no-one given the complexity of the world’s carbon challenge.
Former Australian Energy Market Operator chief executive Audrey Zibelman says electricity is an essential service and nobody should be surprised that governments want to play a major role in guiding the transition to a lower carbon future.
Ms Zibelman said governments would never be “far away” from the provision of electricity, particularly at a time when the world was facing a complicated transition.“Electricity is an essential service. The fact of the matter is you can’t have a healthy economy without reliable, affordable and clean energy,” she said on the sidelines of the Climate Investor Forum in Melbourne.
But Ms Zibelman, who is also advising the Biden administration in the US on infrastructure, said government intervention in energy markets should ideally attract private money into the sector too. Though Australia may not have the financial firepower to match the Inflation Reduction Act, Ms Zibelman said there were advantages to being a small market in global terms.
