Award-winning producers Bruna Papandrea and Tony Ayres are heading up a new summit designed to shake up Australian TV on the international stage.

, the Adelaide-born producer insists there is no formula for success other than the willingness to take risks.s was an adaptation, it was brave in that a series about intergenerational trauma and domestic violence isn’t exactly an easy sell.are two of the strangest series on paper, but they struck a chord because they tapped into universal themes of grief, anger and anxiety in a really unusual way.

“We are in a period of conservatism and contraction in the global television market, so the idea of an event that focuses on courage and risk-taking feels like the perfect thing to be doing,” Ayres says. “If your movie, if your film works, if your TV series works in the home country, it’s got to be very authentic. And I think what international audiences pick up on is that authenticity. When you try to engineer something to travel, it really appeals to no one.”

Known as content quotas, the new rules were slated to be up and running by July 1 this year but have since been delayed. The government proposed either making platforms with more subscribers spend more or demanding a flat rate as a percentage of local revenue. The first model would require market leader Netflix to spend 30 per cent of its budget on local films and shows and Amazon Prime Video 25 per cent because they have the most subscribers.
