Latest Nottingham Forest news as Steve Cooper's Reds beaten 3-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford
There is only one place to start when looking back at Nottingham Forest’s defeat at Old Trafford. As was the case in Steve Cooper’s post-match press conference.
He was asked: “Did you think they were both right?” There was a pause before he said: “I… like I said, you just need things to go your way.”The game had other big moments, too, though. Cooper also acknowledged that. He knows coming away from Manchester United empty-handed wasn’t down to refereeing decisions alone. He will reflect on the whole picture, and despite the result it is one which should add to the sense of encouragement from Forest’s opening three games.
At Old Trafford, both key calls appeared harsh on Cooper’s side. Worrall was tugging at Bruno Fernandes as he fell, but Willy Boly looked to be covering. Meanwhile, the contact between Danilo and Marcus Rashford which led to Attwell pointing to the spot appeared minimal. Indeed, many have accused the United man of diving. He certainly knew what he was doing when Danilo dangled out a leg.
Had an effort from Morgan Gibbs-White not been blocked by teammate Taiwo Awoniyi just before the break it would have been 3-1. It was, Cooper said, “a massive moment”. Boly and substitute Chris Wood also went close in the second half. There are still more steps to be taken, though. Having gone 2-0 up, the Reds invited pressure on a little too much. They still had some positive moments, but United were also able to build up momentum.
