The Australian will head to Wimbledon – where she is a dual quarter-finalist – hungry for success despite falling short in the Birmingham Classic.
Ajla Tomljanovic says she will head to Wimbledon dissatisfied and hungry for success after losing a tension-filled grasscourt final in Birmingham on Sunday.
She was a quarter-finalist at the All England Club in 2021 and 2022 before missing last year because of a knee injury that required an operation and sidelined her for most of the season.“Right now, it all kind of seems a bit negative ... I feel like, in a way, the more I win, the tougher I feel, and that’s not easy to manage,” Tomljanovic told this masthead after her loss on Sunday.
The comeback was on in earnest, and went into overdrive when Tomljanovic scorched an inside-out forehand return winner to break again for a 4-3 lead. However, Tomljanovic stumbled with a third set in sight. Consecutive errors saw her slump to 0-30 then 15-40 as she tried to serve out the second set.
That proved her last chance, and came and went on a missed return. Tomljanovic staved off two championship points, but dragged a forehand wide on the third to concede the title.
