The biggest evacuation in the nation's history is underway in New South Wales as thousands of holiday-makers and residents on the state's south coast rush to leave before conditions worsen on Saturday. The Rural Fire Service has issued further evacuation orders extending from the Shoalhaven - north of Nowra - to the Victorian border and further inland to Kosciuszko National Park and Batlow, in the Riverina.
A seven-day State of Emergency has been declared by New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian - the third in just eight weeks. The Princes Highway opened in some areas on Thursday for people to evacuate under orders of authorities, but the mass exodus caused traffic chaos. Hundreds of people at a roadblock south of Nowra waited more than 10 hours to travel south on the Princes Highway, many of which resorted to sleeping in their cars.
