A bill to create 'safe access zones' that prevent protesting within 150 metres of an abortion clinic passes its first hurdle in South Australia's Parliament.

A bill to create "safe access zones" that prevent protesting within 150 metres of an abortion clinic has passed the Lower House of South Australia's Parliament.SA Labor is confident it will also pass Parliament's Upper HouseThe proposed law passed the House of AssemblyLabor MP Nat Cook, who moved the bill, said the planned legislation would make South Australia a "much more dignified place for those who seek to access a medical health procedure".

Fellow Liberal Matt Cowdrey voted for Mr Speirs' amendment, but said he believed a legal interpretation of the unchanged bill would allow for silent prayer within the zones anyway."It does, importantly, allow women to access a legally permissible service without fear of undue stress or anxiety, respecting the dignity and the moral choice that an individual is free to make.

"This bill maintains the rights of political communication and does not prevent citizens expressing their political view on the issue of abortion on the steps of Parliament … or in fact within 151 metres of [an abortion] facility."The legislation will soon be debated in the Upper House, the Legislative Council, where Labor is confident it will pass. There are six remaining members, including two Greens, on the crossbench.
