Charles Koch , speaking at the Global Philanthropy Forum in Redwood City, California with the GPF's Jane Wales and Charles Koch Foundation President Brian Hooks. To hear Charles Koch describe himself, you might think he wouldn’t have what it takes to become the. “As a kid, I wasn’t good at anything except getting into trouble, and I won’t go into that,” Koch told attendees at the Global Philanthropy Forum conference in Silicon Valley on Tuesday.
Koch is now trying to make his mark both in philanthropy and as a uniting political force—in select areas. “When we look at what we’re doing, we’re coming closer to what I think one of the great social entrepreneurs in our history, Frederick Douglass’ philosophy on this: ‘I’ll unite with anybody to do right and no one to do wrong.’ So that’s kind of where we ended up, after a long journey and a lot of missteps,” Koch said. He shared only a couple examples and did not detail any of the missteps.
