A billionaire property developer is facing 102 charges following the discovery of asbestos in mulch at multiple sites across Sydney.
A billionaire property developer has been charged after the NSW Environment Protection Authority uncovered 102 alleged offences concerning Sydney ’s asbestos mulch crisis earlier this year. Billionaire property developer Arnold Vitocco, along with his company, is facing a slew of charges after bonded asbestos was found in mulch at multiple sites across Sydney earlier this year.
The NSW Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) largest investigation in history discovered the harmful substance at schools, parks and hospitals across the Harbour City. In a media release on Tuesday, the EPA said more than 300 locations were assessed, with 79 found to have contained the contaminated mulch. All sites have now been “cleaned up”. A total of 102 alleged charges have been laid, with one offence against VE Resource Recovery Pty Ltd, another against its sole director Mr Vitocco, and two entities trading as Greenlife Resource Recovery Facility - Freescale Trading Pty Ltd and Runkorp Pty Ltd, both receiving 50 charges each. The offences relate to 26 sites, including Rozelle Parklands, and cover five categories which will be heard in the Land Environment Court, with the first directions hearing scheduled for February 7, 2025. Mr Vitocco, who also owns the popular chocolate chain Max Brenner, is facing an executive liability offence as director of VE Resource Recovery Pty Ltd in relation to the company’s alleged licence breach offence. The EPA said more than 300 locations were assessed, with 79 found to have contained the contaminated mulch.
