The Toorak-based Smorgons have listed a long-held family farm complete with five-bedroom luxury residence.
While the idea of a country weekender might conjure images of a ramshackle cottage on a few acres, the concept takes on an entirely different meaning when you’re one of Australia’s wealthiest families.The 118-hectare property in Pakenham Upper has become, after four decades of ownership, “superfluous to family requirements” for the Toorak-based Smorgons, according to the selling agent, Forbes’ Mike Gibson, who gives a guide around $8.5 million.
Mr Gibson said the proximity to Melbourne meant the property had potential as both a luxury country escape or primary base.“You could definitely base yourself there,” Mr Gibson said. “The visuals are beautiful among rolling hills, it’s less than an hour’s drive from the CBD, and it’s a working farm.”Architects, the main house comes with five bedrooms, five bathrooms and multiple living areas, along with a gourmet kitchen and valley views.
While the Smorgons are regarded as one of Melbourne’s wealthiest families, the business empire can be traced back to a single kosher butcher shop on Lygon Street, following the arrival in 1927 of
