The Birmingham City Council approves new district lines. About 13% of the city's population will be in a new district under the plan that was approved, according to a consultant who worked on the plan.

From left to right, Clinton Woods – District One; Hunter Williams, District 2; LaTonya Tate, District 9; Crystal Smitherman, District 6; Wardine Alexander, District 7; Darrell O’Quinn, District 5; Valerie Abbott, District 3; J.T. Moore, District 4; and Carol Clarke, District 8. The Birmingham City Council voted Tuesday to update boundary lines for its nine districts, based on the 2020 U.S. Census, despite concerns that some residents would now be represented by council members they didn’t elect.

“We’ve got some people, a portion of the electorate, who will be represented by somebody they didn’t have an opportunity to vote for,” she said.“What is driving this is the 2020 Census,” said City Council President Wardine Alexander. “We are doing our duty to reapportion based on the 2020 Census.” Kareem Crayton, a consultant for Crimcard Consulting who worked on the redistricting, told the council that disruption was minimized. Instead of more than 50 percent of the population that could have been changing districts in potential new maps, only about 13 percent will be in a new district under the plan that was approved, he said.

Druid Hills was in his district, District 5, during the 2021 council election, but with the new plan, it goes to District 9, under council member LaTonya Tate.
