The crash happened about 9:10 p.m. Friday on John Rogers Drive at Gun Club Road.
The investigation is ongoing into a horrific exhibition driving crash that police now say injured a total of 16 people.
Fitzgerald on Monday said a Nissan 350z, one of the vehicles that was racing, struck the Charger which sent the Charger into a crowd of onlookers. The Charger caught fire. There were dozens of bystanders watching the exhibition driving, witnesses said. Parts of the crash were captured on video.Police said criminal charges could be forthcoming, such as assault and reckless driving. Thurmond said they will be carrying out search warrants as part of the investigation and, once the probe is complete, they will present their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin joined members of the Jefferson County legislative delegation in November to announce plans to file a bill in the upcoming legislative session to prohibit and impose penalties for certain forms of “exhibition driving,” which includes street and drag racing, burnouts, donuts, and similar activities defined within the bill.
