Women's health advocates are disappointed with the NSW government's response to the landmark inquiry and call for a stronger commitment to midwifery care.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park has apologised to women who did not receive a high standard of maternity care, as part of the government's response to the landmark Birth Trauma Inquiry.
It heard from women who reported inadequate and disrespectful care, mothers who were denied pain relief, bullied, coerced, and given medical procedures without consent in NSW hospitals. A midwife-led continuity of care refers to a model whereby care is provided by the same midwife, or small team of midwives, during pregnancy, labour and birth, and the postnatal periods with referral to specialist care as needed.
Ms Settecasse said because of the damning evidence heard by the inquiry the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District had moved to support the model, but the government's response meant not all women would have access."If you are in Wagga or Byron or wherever else, you may or may not have access to the gold standard of care and choice. This is about birth choice.
